Im Sommer 2007 wurde im Lommel des Nordens – in Finke – die Idee geboren, für die Saison 2008 ein schlagkräftiges MX-Team auf die Beine zu stellen, in dem ein erfahrener Racer wie der Teamchef Michi Peters junge Nachwuchspiloten aus dem Norden unterstützen und coachen kann.

Die Story von Backyard Design begann Ende 2010 in Kalifornien. Besser gesagt in Reeche Canyon. Einem der beliebtesten Freeride Spots in Süd-Kalifornien. Dort lernten sich der Amerikaner Jared Hicks und der Deutsche Philipp Klakow kennen die beide zu der Zeit für die darauffolgende AMA-Supercross Saison trainierten. Die beiden 20-Jährigen fanden schnell heraus dass man nur vom Rennen fahren nicht leben kann und um sich über Wasser zu halten jobbten sie morgens vor dem Training bei einer der größten Motocross-Dekor Firmen in USA. Die beiden hatten immer davon geträumt einen Job in der MX-Szene zu finden und schnell entstand aus dem Aushilfsjob die Idee eine eigene Firma zu Gründen.
